Is it better to update a bathroom, or will that just make it look like it needs updating in a few years if I try to sell? When I’m pondering my guest bathroom (full of unmatched tile, in a 1920s building) is it better to try to keep with with the latest styles in bathrooms or go classic but dull?

Updating a kitchen or bath is the best investment you can make for your home. Many new and potential buyers may not feel up to the challenge of a bathroom renovation on top of moving and other home purchasing stresses. I am a true believer of having respect for the architecture of your 1920’s building. Classic and dull don’t necessarily have to be used in the same sentence. You can still keep up with latest trends with technology but with a classic design approach. Most importantly your bathroom should be a reflection of your personal style. If you have a contemporary aesthetic then perhaps the detailing takes cues from the 1920’s style but is more clean-lined. If you are more traditional then staying true to classic tile patterns and materials is another great option. Here’s the good news…you can have the best of both worlds!

And here’s another small bathroom remodel we saw and liked — for its simplicity and not-too-trendy touches. “Chicago Gardener,” this route should do you!
