Shortly before the Jennifer Aniston/Owen Wilson movie “Marley & Me” opened in theaters last December, I caught up with “Marley” author (and master) John Grogan

He was just moving into a new home in Pennsylvania and their newest pup, Woodson, was channeling Marley. (Read: Taking a wrong turn and running down to the basement, mistaking it for his restroom.)

Nonetheless, John was gracious and told me in a phone interview for the Chicago Tribune all about antique tools and reupholstered sofas. Want to know who has the eye for furniture reincarnation in the Grogan household? Click here.

Hey Elaine, did you work in the same paper with John Grogan when you were in Florida? We love his book!

i think we just missed each other, but we worked at competing papers anyway. i was at the miami herald and grogan was at the fort lauderdale sun-sentinel (which, by the way, the tribune co. owns). “marley” made me hang in there with our latest pooch, bailey. but i think my friends would say that bailey’s got marley beat in the ‘challenging’ dog division…

Hm, I thought he worked in Miami. “Marley” reminds me of our Abbey. Did we tell you that she passed away in April at just 9-years-old?
Is Bailey good now or still misbehaving?

I see you asked him the Toilet Paper question. I think everyone except me puts the loose end outside. At one time toilet paper was designed artfully in color, and the picture always was on the outside. I grew up with it pulling from the inside so I continue. I was ANNOYED when I went into my shop bathroom and saw that someone I had allowed to use my very private bathroom had actually reversed the roll to pull from the outside! Is that nerve or some toilet paper compulsion!
